WHAT IS A SCAR?

How does a scar become a scar?

Scars form as part of the healing process after your skin has been cut or damaged. The skin repairs itself by growing new tissue to pull together the wound and fill in any gaps caused by the injury. Scar tissue is made primarily of a protein called collagen. Scars develop in all shapes and sizes.

What exactly is a stretch mark?

A stretch mark is a type of scar that develops when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly.

The abrupt change causes the collagen and elastin, which support our skin, to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.

Not everyone develops these narrow bands on their skin. Fluctuating hormone levels seem to play a role. You may also have a higher risk if people in your family get stretch marks.

If you develop stretch marks, you’re most likely to do so during these times:

  • Growth spurts that happen in puberty

  • Pregnancy

  • Rapid weight loss or gain

  • Weight training when you have rapid muscle growth

Applying a corticosteroid to your skin for a long time can also cause stretch marks. If you have Cushing’s disease or Marfan syndrome, you may see stretch marks.

When stretch marks first appear, they tend to be red, purple, pink, reddish-brown, or dark brown, depending on your skin color. Early stretch marks may feel slightly raised and can be itchy.

In time, the color fades and the narrow bands sink beneath your skin. If you run your finger over a mature stretch mark, you often feel a slight depression

There are two types of camouflage techniques Inkless and Pigment

ISR is a way to revise, and camouflage stretch marks by using a customized healing serum instead of pigment.  ISR is suitable for all ages (18+) and can be done anywhere on the body except the face.  ISR is permanent as long as weight remains stable.

Am I a good candidate for stretch mark camouflage?

We will determine if you are a good candidate for medical tattooing after assessing your cosmetic concerns.

Medical tattooing can revise a wide range of skin irregularities, but some skin conditions and pigmentation concerns may require a more complex or aggressive treatment approach.

Patients with raised scars, scars that are darker in color than the surrounding skin, or scars that receive frequent sun exposure may be better candidates for alternative scar revision procedures.

Scar revision treatments, including medical tattooing, should not be performed on scars or stretch marks that are less than one year old and/or have not stabilized in appearance.

AFTERCARE

It’s very important to follow the proper aftercare instructions with both of these procedures. If they are followed, you should find your healing time much quicker. But if you do not follow proper instructions, you run the risk of getting your skin inflamed and slowing down the healing process. For example, if you go to a pool, beach, sauna or sweat excessively too soon, you put your results at risk.

At the end of the day, most people have had stretch marks their whole life, so taking a few weeks to treat the area properly is totally worth the beautiful result at the end!

This treatment is a miracle, so for those who have dealt with stretch marks for 10,20,30 years, this wait is nothing! Just because you may not see results after the first session, does not mean it won’t work.

Medical tattooing involves minimal downtime and discomfort. Immediately after your medical tattooing session, the treatment site may appear to have very dark coloring, and the area may be tender. These symptoms will diminish naturally as healing progresses.

With proper care, medical tattoos can heal within about 10 days from the surface however will take 60-120 days underneath the skin to fully heal.

To prevent fading and support healing, it is important to closely follow all aftercare instructions and to protect the treatment site from:

  • Prolonged exposure to water

  • Excessive friction and force

  • Direct sunlight

  • Contact with chlorinated water and/or salt water

  • Skin care products, including soaps and lotions

RESULTS

Clients will return for a follow up 60-90 days after, this is to see if there is any need for a touchup. And usually, 40% of clients will want/need 1-3 more sessions. And the results are permanent!

This Treatment often requires two or three sessions to achieve the desired coverage and/or depth of color. Some fading of the pigment is to be expected in the first 10-14 days after a camouflage session.

The color will stabilize within four to six weeks after treatment. You can then schedule a follow-up tattoo session if any adjustments or enhancements are needed to optimize your results.

The Camouflage can last many years with proper care. Keeping the tattooed skin hydrated and consistently using sunscreen can help prevent fading and promote long-lasting results.

If you have darker skin, you are less likely to need a touchup. And sometimes it may only be a few stretch marks that need a touchup, during your follow up appointment. It’s important to understand all of our bodies are unique, which means the healing process may look a little different for all of us. So, patience and responsibility will lead to an amazing result to last you a lifetime!
